  1. Question: If a child is moved from one cultural setting to another at a young age, what is the youngest they can be to still remember the ways of their first culture?

    Fact: Many families from the Middle East came to America as a result of political and religious unrest in their world in early 1980's.

  3. Question:Why does immigration seem to go in trends?

    Fact: 1/4 of Americans were a race other than Caucasian in the 2000 census.

  4. Question: Why does half of the Asian American population reside in only the three states of California, New York, and Hawaii?

    Quote: "Cultural diversity has not only transformed the composition of the U.S. population, but it has also enriched the character of life in the United States." (8)

    Fact: During the 1990s, the Hispanic population increased by 58 percent, or 35.3 million, making it the largest minority group, surpassing African Americans by approximately 1 million people. Latinos now represent 12.5 percent of the population.

    Given the fact that 1 in 4 Americans is of a different race than white, what can we as perspective teachers do to become more linguistically prepared for the language barriers we will see in our classes?

    Fact
    The more time that passes, the more diverse our country becomes. This diversity doesn’t only come from ethnicity but from life and its many differences and experiences.

    For years we have been defined by our race, When are we going to accept each other as humans? i understand culture plays a great role in this.

    The beginning of slavery in the 17th century marked the start of violent persecution and segregation of African Americans that formally ended with the Emancipation Proclamation in 1864

  7. Question: Are current educators of young multicultural children prepared for the increased diversity inside their classrooms?

    Informative Fact: One of the most significant facts regarding Asian Americans is that 86 percent of them have earned a high school diploma.

  8. Question: Since immigration has the tendency to be viewed as a negative thing in our society, how can I as a teacher effectively teach my students the true concept of immigration? What activities can I use to further illustrate immigration to my lower elementary students?

    Fact: We are all faced with various degrees of diversity and we are all a part of it (p.31).

    Question: Why is there not more awareness on "white" culture? All white people don't descend from the same culture, just as not every Hispanic is Mexican nor is every black person necessarily of African descent. Could we further teach tolerance if we put less emphasis on skin color and more on specific backgrounds of all students?

  10. Question: How can we get more culturally diverse school teachers to teach these culturally diverse students?

    Fact: Asian Americans are the second largest growing ethnic group.

  11. Question: On page 21, the book states that “census data from 2006 shows that Asian Americans are the second-largest-growing ethnic group and on page 23, it states that Hispanics are the fastest growing non-European Americans. What is the fastest growing ethnic group overall?

    Fact: To be a teacher, we have to be open to all creating lasting relationships with students and families from many different cultures from all over the world. We must take an in-depth look at and become aware of our views of diversity before we can truly create a successful culturally diverse classroom community.

    Quote: “Our present U.S. society has sometimes been described as a wonderful tossed salad” (P9) I really like this quote because it makes me think. We are all different, just as the ingredients in a salad (lettuce, tomatoes, cheese etc) but when we all work together we create wonderful things.

  12. Question: Why are some areas of the United States characterized by a higher degree of diverse populations than other areas?

  13. Question: How much has diversity changed over the last hundred years in America?

    Quote: "Hispanics are found in greater numbers in Texas, South Florida, and California, cities such as Chicago and Seattle include large populations of Asian Indians and Vietnamese, and Alaska, Arizona, and New Mexico are home to large populations of Native Americans." PG. 6

    Fact: Over the last two decades the ethnographic composition in schools has changed. PG 6

  14. Question- Pg 33- Am I aware that todays preschoolers, kindergartners, and primary grade students will live their adult lives in a new era very different than mine?

    Quote- Pg 34- Education is a process of guiding and preparing a child to succeed in life.

    Fact- Pg 22- Amerasian is a term used to describe individuals born of Vietnamese mothers and US service membersin Vietnam during the Vietnam War. The Amerasian Homecoming Act was created for these children.

  15. Fact: Between 1985-1994 almost 10 million people came to the US; 2.7 million came from Mexico, 1 million from the Carribean, 1 million from Europe, and 5 million from other parts of the world. pg 15
    Quote: "Nothing in this world reflects diversity more than nature. The landscape of Earth is an intricate mix of shapes, forms and colors, each with its own identity and spirit." pg 4
    Question: Why does the census think that the latino population is going to increase so much in the next 40 years, and that it will surpass African Americans?

  16. QUESTION: Is the reason people immigrate to the United States, solely due to the fact that we are a land of the "free"?
    QUOTE: PG. 6: "Educators at all levels are aware that diversity exists in schools. We recognize its effects on our way of thinking, and we know its impact through the new laws and regulations that mandate changes in the schools and society at large."
    FACT: PG. 23: Puerto Ricans are U.S. Citizens by birth and can live anywhere in the U.S. or it's territories they desire.

  18. Question: Why is it that even though we live in a country that is a "melting pot" of all culture, races, and religions.. that we still have discrimination, why was there ever slavery? I know that there is not one single answer to this question but it is something that really got to me as I was reading this chapter.

    Fact: (pg.12) The first great wave of immigrants during the 20th century happened between 1905 and 1915 when many economic and political events in Europe caused 10 million people to find saftey in the U.S.

    Quote:(pg.25) "Having survived centuries of persecution and genocide, the Native Americans are working hard to reclaim thier place in U.S. society."

    The U.S. Census bureau projects that by the year 2050, there will be 392 million people in the United States. Projections indicate that Latinos will be the fastest growing population, rising from 9.7 percent to 22.5 percent. They are expected to surpass African Americans as the largest minority in the country by 2010. Page 16-17

    Question
    With the predicted population to rise to 392 million by the year 2050, what does this mean for future teachers? Will we be faced with having to handle larger multiracial classrooms?
