  1. Question: Why did it take so long (the 1960's) until multicultural education became a phenomenon and people started to put effort in to accomodate the necessities of children with diverse backgrounds?

  6. Question: Should there be a mandate for current tenured teachers to gain knowledge about multiculturism to help aid them in teaching their now diverse classrooms?

    Informative Fact: (1960’s) It was estimated that 40 million children were living in poverty in the United States, the wealthiest country in the world. (p.178)

    Fact: Johann Pestalozzi...based his ideas on the essential principle that "all people, including the poor, could and should learn." Pestalozzi is credited with translating Rousseau's ideas into practice, devoting his life to education of the poor (p165).

    Question: What are the drawbacks of being a child in the U.S. and not speaking English? How can we help them transition better and how can other students who do spaek English acquire understanding and help students who don't speak English?

    Fact: The first was the landmark supreme court decision of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas in 1954, which ruled that segrated schoold did not provide equal opportunites. page 174

  9. Question: Was mulitcultural education a product of the civil right movement or would it have come about regardless, sooner or later?

    Fact: Head Start serves more than 900,000 children...Of it's enrollment, 67% are ethnic minorities, with Afican American and Hispanics as the largest groups.

  11. Question: How should teachers handle topics such as slavery, civil rights etc with a classroom of diverse students?

    Fact: To understand multi-cultural education, we must understand that there are inequalities in opportunities and services, and unfair treatment based on gender, social class, race and ethnic origin in the school setting.

  19. Fact- The U.S. have been and continue to plagued with discrimination against those who, because of their social status,gender,race, or ethnicity differ from mainstream U.S. culture.

    FACT: PG 170: During the 1940s another educator made a difference in the lives of others. Miles A. Cary organized educational services for thousands of Japanese American children in relocation camps.

    Fact: In 1994, congress approved Early Head Starts, a new program that provides services to infants toddlers, and pregant woment.

    Question: Why are Head Starts slipping thourgh the cracks?

  22. Fact- pg 181 atleast 10% of head starts enrollment must be allocated to children with disabilities.

    Question- Why dont we try teaching foreign languages at youngers ages if according to pg 186 claims that language acquistion and development is best facilitated during earlier years?
