    Fact: Multicultral education is the idea that all children should have access to quality learning experiences.

    Fact: Selecting appropriate materials that foster tolerance and celebrate diversity is a skill all early childhood proffessionals sould acquire.

    Fact: Promoting a sense of pride in cultural identity, helping children to aquire the skills and knowledge necessary to become sucessful members of a multicultural society, and building a sence of respect and tolerance about diversity describe some of the current directions and concerns for multiculturalism in the early childhood classroom.

    Question: How does a teacher learn about the cultural relevance of students in his/her classroom if he/she is not naturally aware?

    Fact: The expectations in a curriculum plan is equivalent to the goals and objectives for the curriculum plan.

    Question: What's the best way to be multicultural in a situation where there isn't much "multiculturalism?"

  8. Question: Pg. 303. The book says that children with disabilities who belong to an ethnic group other than the mainstream culture should be tested in their primary language by a teacher whi is fluent in that language and knowledgable of the culture. Does this happen now? With the variety of languages and cultures I think this would be difficult to accomplish.
    Quote:Pg. 305. Teachers have been prevented for too lang from making curricular decisions for which they are qualified and to which they are entitled. When teachers are entrusted with the task of educational reform, the results are highly positive for both the child and the teacher.
    Fact: Pg 286. When experiences are personally and culturally meaningful, interest and engagement in experences facilitates knowledge building.

  9. Fact: As teachers, we have to be optimistic about teaching multiculturally. If we go into the classroom thinking we can't do it, we wont be effective.

    Question: How can teachers feel confident about teaching in a diverse setting if they have never been exposed to it either through their own education or in their field experience?

  10. Question: Why do we not have standards that teachers need to follow for multiculturalism? It would be easier to make lesson plans involving multicultural learning if we had GLE's to follow.

    Fact: True "monocultural" classrooms are very unlikely to exist in our present society when we consider the comprehensiveness of diversity. Page 291.

    Fact: A lot of early childhood teachers practice multicultural education.

  12. Question: As a teacher, in developing my curriculum, how do I help those students who are struggling and falling farther behind, but at the same time challenge those students who have firmly grasped the concepts?

    Informative Fact: According to DCAP, the real curriculum is constantly changing as the students reveal their needs and interests in the classroom.

    Fact: The standards movement has led to the establishment of expectations for young children's academic achievment. Florida, Texas, and California all with highly diverse student populations established their own standards and use them in defining learning outcomes for young children. p285

    Quote: "To be effective, a curriculum needs to have personal relevance, an idea espoused by John Dewey many decades ago. Dewey believed that children show involvement in things in which they find a purpose commensurate to their interest.     What defines developmentally and culturally appropriate practice in a classroom setting?
    Fact:
    In order to provide a child-centered developmentally based, multicultural and culturally responsive classroom you need to consider:
    1) What is developmentalyy sound for this group?
    2)What is meaningful to this group?
    3)What is relevant knowledge versus what is trivial?
    4)What is the prior knowledge your learners possess?
    5) What is culturally relevant to your learners?
